Eating Out!

Fishers Fish & Chips – Fulham High Street, Fulham, London SW6

Take-away fish & chips – No: 4 of 12,000+ eateries on Trip Advisor.

Price guide: £ (£2 – £7)

Welcome return to this fully refurbished premises (following disastrous fire some years ago) of lovingly remembered owner twins from their previous place at Baileys in Dawes Road. This family have been providing the very best fish & chips for decades and 30+ years ago their parents used to run the one other excellent and comparable fish & chip take-away in Burgess Hill, Sussex, who occasionally sold that rarity now, brill.

This is a real family business and a real challenge to find better quality and value-for-money anywhere else. A friendly welcome is assured even when extremely busy as on most occasions and especially now with the delightfully decorated adjoining cosy restaurant (max. seating: 20) where booking is essential to avoid disappointment.

Fine dining – the best restaurant for eating in the area. Small, cosy, authentic Italian run by hospitable partners. Weekdays value for money £10 fixed lunch (choosing from 4/5 main courses) including a glass of wine.

Maltby Street Market – Ropewalk, London SE1 2HQ

Open: Saturday mornings 9.00 am – 4.00 pm

London’s best kept secret market – forget expensive Borough Market and venture further along to near Tower Bridge (south side) for the best quality street food in London – but get there early to avoid the queues especially for the salt beef, pastrami and latkes at Monti’s Deli. Also five micro-breweries in the railway arches in the vicinity. Enjoy!

Forget the bland, uninteresting Hall & Woodhouse ales (dreaded “beer tie”) and head straight for the restaurant which has an excellent menu at sensible prices and a wine list that includes Berry Bros Good Ordinary Claret at £20 per bottle. The food is prepared by the chef/owner who is definitely talented and knowledgeable. The new season English asparagus with hollandaise, poached egg and crispy bacon (at £6 plus £1 extra for the additional crispy smoked bacon) was both generous and delicious whilst the Cornish crab on a bed of avocado with salad and good fresh brown bread could be had as a starter at £7 or a main at £14 – the main was again a very generous portion and delightful. Go for the food and wine! Tastefully decorated with a nice outside patio garden in the rear. Shame about the ales though!
